The Great Debate

I might be shooting myself in the foot for announcing this to everyone who stumbles across my blog, but here goes nothing. This year, just like the past 3 years, I started it on Halloween. My friends think I’m uber weird. Neighbors glare. And my poor roommate, well she just rolls her eyes and puts her headphones in (she’s a good sport, bless her heart). That’s right. On Halloween, I start listening to Christmas music.

I know what you’re thinking… WHAT?! That’s way too early! You’re also probably assuming that I’m one of those overly-excited Christmas loving oddballs that goes as far as to have a Santa and reindeer shining from the roof along with a well-lit Nativity scene in the front yard and a gigantic blown-up Frosty the Snowman in the back. Don’t worry. I’m  not that crazy.

Actually, I think I’m quite practical for my Christmas music listening. Allow me to explain. From what I’ve concluded, there are two main reasons people don’t like to listen to Christmas music really early. First, they get sick of it. For me personally, that is a non-issue. I’m one of those people who can listen to the same song for an hour straight and not get tired of it because I love it so much, or watch a movie every day for a week because it’s my current favorite. When I love something, I LOVE it. And I love Christmas music :)

Second, people are frustrated because they think Thanksgiving is being overlooked. Believe me, the last thing I want to do is skip over Thanksgiving. I adore Thanksgiving! I have so much to be thankful for, and I absolutely love the time with family. Plus, the food is never a bad thing, either. Ha. Au contraire, I’d like to think that by listening to Christmas music so early, I’m getting excited for both holidays. You see, there is no such thing as Thanksgiving music. If there was, I’d be listening to that on Halloween instead of Christmas music. Since there’s not, I even like to think of Christmas music as “winter music,” music that captures the spirit of Thanksgiving and Christmas: giving and loving on God and each other. Therefore, I’d like to think that my early Christmas music habits are very legitimate and I’m sticking to it, thank-you-very-much.

Oh, one other thing I love about the winter…. Christmas lights!! I recently bought a bunch to hang up around my room. No, not the colored ones. Don’t worry. Just some nice white ones to add a little cheer and warmth to the dreary dorm room. It looks so much prettier this way. And I’m kind of obsessed with pretty lighting. (I blame it on photography.) Happy Holidays!
