It’s been just over a year since I started this little ole blog of mine. It’s kind of hard to believe it… I still had one more year of school, still had no idea what I was doing with my camera, and was just barely beginning to grasp what I wanted for the rest of my life. But it’s amazing what one year can do. I’m done with school and I’ve married my best friend, I’ve learned more about my camera than I thought possible (it’s kind of become an extension of my arm), and I have no doubt in my mind about all the amazing things I hope to accomplish in this lifetime. I look back at some of those first posts, like the one about sand volleyball, and I laugh. Because I was nervous and had no idea what I was doing and didn’t know the difference between the aperture and the ISO on my camera. I look back at some of the more personal ones, like the one where my mom sent me pumpkin bread, and I cry. Because I remember the feelings I had when I was writing that post and the memories of being in school and away from Jake and my family. And then I look at some of the more recent ones, like the one with Sarah and Jacob, and I smile. Because I am working on making my dream a reality and I feel like I’m getting there. I’m making progress. And I love what I do.

So for today, while they aren’t the most glamorous shots in the world, I decided it would be fun to do a little now and then. A look back at where I was last year, and where I am this year. How, you ask? Well last year I took pictures of the kids I nanny during the summer. (Which would be the “then” part.) So I decided to do it again this year. And yes, ok, for those of you who are super observant, this did span over the course of two days, so they are wearing two different outfits. I mean, my photography isn’t the only thing that changed over the year… these kids got like ten times more energy I swear! It’s not easy to catch them sitting down. Gotta love ‘em! But anyways, enjoy the now :)

And then I got Chase to smile, but Brayden decided to make a grumpy face… lol. I just love these guys.

This is Haley. A totally awesome and totally gorgeous senior from Park City High School. When I met with Haley and her mom to discuss what they envisioned for her pictures, I almost spit out my Shaken Iced Passion Tea Lemonade (a summer favorite). Haley wanted some pictures in the University of Utah Natatorium. Because Haley is a diver. And a good one at that. Yep, she went to state and everything. The whole enchilada. So when she said she wanted to do some of her pictures at the U in her diving stuff, I was more than happy to oblige!! I mean, how awesome is that?! I told her how awesome I thought that was, and then went on to mention that I couldn’t swim to save my life. But to show how much of a sweetheart she is, after I made that slightly ignorant comment, she kindly pointed out that diving is basically a totally sport different from swimming, and she doesn’t really swim at all other then to the edge of the pool after she dives. HELLO. Definitely one of those times I should have thought a little more before bursting out with the randomness going on in my head…  Anyways. Haley has aspirations of studying engineering in college. Once again, awesome.Will she continue diving? She’s not quite sure about that. But one thing I’m sure of, whatever Haley decides to do, she’ll be going places :)

Meet Suzi and Ryan. They’re happily married, and one of the most amazing couples I’ve ever met. Why? Well, on top of many other reasons, they’re apart more than they’re together. Because Ryan is serving our country. Allll the way over in Afghanistan. He’s a tech guy who checks out the helicopters and makes sure they’re able to fly. He helps keep our soldiers safe. I cannot even begin to describe the immense respect I have for these two, because being apart from Jake while I was in school was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, and that pales in comparison to the sacrifice Suzi and Ryan are making. Ryan was able to come home for a short visit last week, and I was so honored when they asked me to capture their love. And believe me, their love is a beautiful thing. So blatantly obvious you can’t help but smile when you see them together. Just the way it’s supposed to be…

The light? Yeah, it was exquisite.

We found this gate. And I loved it.

Ryan wasn’t so sure of himself at first, but I think he figured out the whole modeling thing pretty quickly :)

She is one of those people. The kind of person who’s warmth and joy is contagious. The simple sound of her laugh can make your day 10 times better. She is happiest when everyone around her is happy. The kind of person who makes you a better person for knowing them. Know what I’m talking about? And to top it off she’s so beautifully talented that if I didn’t love her so much I’d be jealous ;) Emily is one of my closest friends, and she is pursuing her dream in photography as well. She doesn’t have  a blog yet (I know, I know!! I’m working on it…), but you can see some of her work on her flickr account. I’m telling you internet, this girl is going places.

Yesterday, after a somewhat rainy and slightly gloomy afternoon, the evening opened up into heavenly rays of sun, and we decided to take advantage of it. Maybe it’s because she’s a photographer herself, or maybe it’s because she’s drop dead gorgeous, or maybe it’s because she’s ridiculously fun to be with, but whatever the reason, she was a piece of cake to photograph!! I haven’t had this much fun on a shoot since my guilty pleasure. Don’t get me wrong, I lurrrve shooting weddings. Lurve it. But there’s something different about doing portraits. It’s an opportunity for me to create moments, rather than capture the moments as they unfold. I’m just glad I don’t have to pick one :) But enough about me, back to Emily!!

It had been rainy the last several days. And, being humid Indiana, that meant that it was still soggy in a lot of places. Particularly any foresty-type area that would retain mud and water easily. Which is exactly the area I had in mind for this shoot. So when I called Lindsey up to warn her that it might be muddy, I told her I would understand if she didn’t want to do it. After all, not many people would want to spend an evening posing for a camera in a swamp. But Lindsey? Yeah, she was game.

Lindsey is one of the most beautiful people I have ever met, inside and out. She has a zest for life and photography that is inspiring. I had the privilege of going to school with her and enjoying her company in many a photo class. Let me tell you, she is just as talented as she is beautiful. Seriously, check out her website. As you can see from that, she’s awesome. And, as you can see from these pictures below, she’s also quite the model :)

It had been too long. Actually, waaaay too long. I needed to get out of the lull, out of the cycle of nothing but homework assignments and obligatory projects. I needed to do something for myself. I needed to shoot just for fun. Because really, that’s what it’s all about, right? Doing what you do because you love it, you have a passion for it. If that love and that passion start to die away, then something’s wrong. And that’s when I called Brittney.

Brittney is an amazing girl, full of life and bubbling over with laughter so contagious she could make Scrooge break a smile. I love this girl and I was so pumped when she gladly accepted to spend some time in front of my camera. It was short but sweet, and totally made me refreshed to push through this last 5 weeks of school. (Well, for the most part anyway. I still have a severe case of senioritis going on.) Hopefully you’ll enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed this shoot, because it was a blast! Thank you again, Britt, you’ll always be my favorite model ;)

Last week in my Product Photography class we were given an assignment that really made me excited. The goal was to create an image that would suffice for an album cover of a band or musician. I had the privilege of shooting Jeffrey Stuttler, an amazing guitarist and vocalist from my school. Jeff is one of those people that all photographers love; he was extremely easy to photograph and willing to do anything I asked him for a shot. We only turned in one shot for the final project, but I’m really pleased with how a lot of them turned out. I pushed myself on some of the edits. I’m trying hard to go out of the box a little, and do things other than just my standard touch up. Thanks again Jeff, you’re a stud!

Earlier this week, David Terry was kind enough to invite me to an event in Provo hosted by East Bay Studios. Basically, what it was, was bunch of photographers getting together with a bunch of people who wanted to model. The photographers get to take pictures, the models get to have pictures, and everyone is happy lol. It was an excellent experience for me, and I’m so glad I was able to go! Here are my personal favorite shots of the night… 

I just want to say thanks to David again… I wouldn’t have come if he hadn’t invited me and I wouldn’t have been able to get some of these last shots without him helping get the lighting set up!! Thanks so much again Mr. Terry!!!!

Meet Brayden, Jessie, and Chase! These beautiful children are the kids I nanny. Yep, I get to play with them all week! Don’t be jealous :) They are so much fun! Jessie is 8, she is such a great helper, and we especially love to do puzzles. Brayden and Chase are twins, 4 1/2 years old. They are quite the balls of energy! (Freeze tag is the name of the game! lol) Never a dull moment with them. I’ve been meaning to take some pictures of them for quite a while, and when I finally got my new lens (50mm 1.4), I figured that was a pretty good excuse. Kids are fun so fun to photograph, always moving, smiling, making funny faces… A challenge but rewarding! Enjoy some of my favorite pictures from a day with the kids!

Last semester in my Photo Lighting class, we had an assignment to do a low key shoot. When I think low key, I think high fashion. In order to make my ideas a reality, my awesome cousin Alyssa got all dressed up and modeled some of her Coach purses. She did an amazing job! Plus, we had a ton of fun. Yeah, don’t be fooled by her serious faces, we were laughing almost the entire time… haha.
